Being a musician as well as a painter, I bring into my paint work the same creative process which lies behind Improvisation in music: the spontaneity and intuitive signals of the moment of creation. I like to leave impressed in clay the immediacy of this process, both in lines and in colors. The canvas, as an object which gives form to an empty space, serves as the starting point for ideas. Nature, especially life signs, and ancient cultural marks transformed by the passing of time are constant sources of inspiration.

Swirling, Whirling Cages

The images of Gintautas Velykis, a painter, digital artist and musicant from Kaunas, Lithuania, can be said to represent a process of evolution.
"I very rarely start out with any idea of where I'm going", he says. "For me, it's generally a random creative process of having fun with the tools and following my whims."

Gintautas trademark seems to be his use of colored lights. Frequently with the mixsed snail, spiral, ring - shaped objects, he will create transparent models and light them from the inside.
The beauty of the illumination in the Cages imagery is that things can to convolve, intersect, divide extremely, to share one's experience with others forms and overlap in ways that can't be in reality.

Uncage art's restless creativity unearthed many new and unconventional electric guitar techniques, and he combined these innovations with a strong sense of logic and concise development, often aided by sophisticated sound-processing devices.

............
Uncage art plays the guitar with an unrivalled craftsmanship and uses his talent enthusiastically to further the development of improvised music.
The craze of his unexpected musical turns and the original and unconventional use he makes of his instrument add to the accesibility of his music.

............
Velykis art represents the synthesis of many interests, not only nature, but a fascination with biology, astronomy, geometry, physics and other subjects.
A new dimention to his sights was added engineering, visual design, scientific disciplines, models of biological growth processes.
Velykis also turns to Stereo 3D for his imaging.

His repertory includes landscapes, travelling impressions, still-lifes, though reconstructed from the chaos of memories and mixed with playful elements like slats, moulders, dice, rings, which, when frozen in a white void, evoke associations with surrealist atmosphere.
Usually, energy is an element of his systems, with the result that the constructions, even those whose mass should guarantee weight and stability, seem to split or to burst from within to soar into space.

Gintautas Velykis paintings are built of light linear fabric whose wireframe herbaceus mirages stands in delicate contrast to the foggy background.
..............

What is his earlier figural images only added dynamism and a dramatic quality to his scenes, the effect of which may be his lack of a sense of life stability and could lead to half existentialist attitudes, has now transformed into a force active within the matter and spreading splinters of the world over the meander surface of the colorful plans.

Yet rather than juggling with words, for fear that the word "UNCAGErism" should escape our lips, let us follow the discreetly controlled trace of the imagination of a man whose intuition is purely visual, who is sensitive to the stimuli from the world, and whose choice of the various media as his devices is also one of a subtle play, devoid of any provincial traits, literal qualities, let alone amateurism.

The original impulse may be traced back to calligraphic and Oriental signs which, though powerful, has only helped author release his own leanings based on observation and personal experience.
G. Velykis had taken some time to embark on his track.
Until then, his pictures were figural scenes featuring philosophical and poetic motifs.
Yet, curiously enough, he has succeeded in preserving the basic way of his metaphysical philosophic in his current works built of signs stream and dimply.
His unceasing link with nature and, even more, the type of energy they emanate.
As regards the former, the artist does not try to conceal the effect of his personal experience and visual seansations on his subject-matter.

Velykis painting had every object moving and changing

As a boy growing up on tiny grandfathers land mountain off the bank of small stream, Gintautas favorite daily activity was to keep watch over the beautiful nature of the bottom stones, water plants and colorful creatures. Today Velykis still goes there, but now spends most of his time creating his own fantastic life forms and spaces on his computer or freehand draws.

The abstract, organic forms, such as the water ripples, the shades shapes, the colorful tree, shells, light spray or the textured balls, celebrate nature and draw much of their inspiration throm the artist's young day's impressions.
...............

Organic constructivism, molecular Cage of the linked partitions, a system based on pulsatory mechanics which sets visual structures in motion thanks to the potency inherent in their shape and mutual spatial relations.
.....................

Velykis interest in computers originated with his passion for music. A large portion of his space is taken up with a MIDI studio, that he uses to create sound effects and music tracks for jazz improvisation backgrounds and projects.
............

His playing creates a fresh and individual sound featuring and irresistible rhythms, virtuoso improvisation, evocative melodies and powerful resonances of Classical, African and Indian music.
........
Musician focuses on the percussive and rhythmic sound spectrum to structure the music because all the pieces are improvised and recorded in real time.
.................

While most of today's artists can still point to some previous traditional training , Velykis is rooted in the artistical realm.
" My father was a fireman-driver, mother -cook, later folk artist, brother - musical engineer and computerist,
so I has a little bit of various and some mixed hobbys, but I would say that drawing - wise."
" I learned how to draw from 11 years old in different art shools, a long time professionally work for advertising company in design department with digital media, so I can draw equal on the computer or freehand." the author states.
These days, Velykis works solo and he likes it that way.

UNCAGED TOYS.
That's the first impression of Gintautas Velykis studio on the bottom floor of his house in the small Kelmu street of Kaunas town. Model structures, rotors-motors, slide projectors, aerobrushes and plastic shapes share equal space with PC, keyboard synthesizers, cables, guitars, frames, lenses and paper sheets - they're all tools that free the creative processes.
The quintessential homebody, Velykis wants to be able to do everything from his studio - and he's not far from his goal.
.............

Velykis, who began his computer art training in 1985, has benefitted from such tools as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw!, 3D Studio, True Space, Bryce 3D - for imaging. Band in a Box, Jammer, Guitar Studio, Power Chords, Probe, Rebirth - for music.
...........
Aiming to create art that is "more intriguing the more you look at it", Velykis is continually inspired by the everchanging medium that he has "grown up" with. Just the same, he notes ironically, "I've started to take wall-painting classes".
